Radiohead have been under constant fire since announcing their show in Tel Aviv, Israel, due to the ongoing conflict between Palestine and the afore mentioned country. A lot of it stems from Israel’s treatment of Palestine.
Several big names have signed the petition urging Radiohead not to perform their scheduled show Israel’s Park Hayarkon, including Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, bishop Desmond Tutu, director Ken Loach, Thurston Moore and Young Fathers. Currently there is an industry boycott of the country due to Palestinian apartheid.
A snippet reads: “In asking you not to perform in Israel, Palestinians have appealed to you to take one small step to help pressure Israel to end its violation of basic rights and international law. Surely if making a stand against the politics of division, of discrimination and of hate means anything at all, it means standing against it everywhere – and that has to include what happens to Palestinians every day.”
On Wednesday (July 19), Radiohead took the stage and made history.
According to Reddit, this was Radiohead’s second longest show ever, and their longest in eleven years. Thom Yorke spoke about the controversy during the show: “A lot of stuff has been said about this, but in the end, we play some music.”
The band just wrapped up their world tour behind A Moon Shaped Pool. They also just reissued their phenomenal album OK Computer with tons of bonus materials as OKOKNOTOK. The album was dedicated by Thom Yorke to his longtime partner, Rachel Owen, who passed away on December 18.
